MTV.com – After talking with MTV News’ Jim Cantiello about her heartfelt tribute to the late Michael Jackson at the VMAs on Sunday night, Madonna also answered questions about Lady Gaga and her daughter, Lourdes.

Gaga, of course, has been frequently compared to Madonna — both musically and as an icon — and her performance at the VMAs on Sunday has been compared with Madonna’s famous VMA performances.

While she didn’t see Gaga’s avant-garde red-carpet getup in person, Madonna did catch it on a television screen backstage.

“I just saw Lady Gaga,” Madonna said with a smile. “She looks like she’s going to carnival in Venice, very beautiful.”

When asked if she feels at all threatened by the comparisons, Madonna said, “No, I’m very flattered.”

What about Lady Gaga’s escort, Kermit the Frog?

“I missed that,” Madonna said. Asked if she’d ever been escorted by Kermit, she joked, “No, but I’ve dated some frogs.”

When asked if her daughter Lourdes — who is such a big Gaga fan that she danced on a table during a Gaga concert that Madonna took her to earlier this year — is interested in show business, Madonna turned serious.

“She’s got school tomorrow, so she’s in the bed sleeping,” she said. “I think she has an interest, but she has time — she’s not even 13 yet, so give her a few more years.”

All week long, there’s been one Video Music Awards performance that everyone has been talking about … even if very few people actually know anything about it.

It’s Lady Gaga’s sure-to-surprise VMA set, and it’s already drawn rave reviews from the likes of Perez Hilton, who discussed details with Gaga last month in Japan and promised that the performance would be “next level.” All week, as the VMA set was being constructed and show rehearsals got under way, it’s been the subject of constant whispers and speculation. People cannot wait to see what Gaga’s got in store for us on Sunday night.

Of course, it hasn’t helped matters that Gaga’s rehearsals are closed-door affairs, meaning that only a select few VMA VIPs have been allowed to see it. But after days of trying, we finally managed to corner one of them long enough to get some information.

During a run-through yesterday, MTV News spoke to VMA Creative Director Lee Lodge — the man whose basic job description is “the guy who makes everything and everyone associated with the show look amazing” — about Gaga’s performance. And while he wasn’t exactly forthcoming with specifics (he’s afraid of ninjas, as you’ll see), he did make it sound like it could become one for the history books.

“There’s one other look, which is fantastic, which is Gaga. The Gaga performance could be a classic VMA performance,” Lodge said. “There are some other great looks in the show — Beyoncé is fabulous — but I think the Gaga look … this could be a classic, Madonna-like performance. But if I was to tell you [any details], the Haus of Gaga would ninja-kill me with lace and fingernails.”

Though the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards don’t begin until Sunday night, the bass-bumping, guitar-wailing action is already in full swing inside New York’s Radio City Music Hall as superstar artists rehearse for their performances.

And you know what? It’s just not fair that we’re the only ones who get a sneak peek at this pop-culture heaven. That’s why we’ve decided to pull aside the curtain and let you know what the first 30 minutes of the VMA show will deliver.

A very special tribute to Michael Jackson will begin the show, and Janet Jackson will be there to take part. From there, it’s off to the entertainment races. Get ready for Eminem, Jack Black, Pete Wentz, Kristin Cavallari, Justin Bieber and Miranda Cosgrove.

Did we mention you’ll also get Shakira and “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner too? Well, it’s gonna happen, so get prepared, and time your bathroom breaks wisely. In the first 30 minutes, you’ll also be treated to performances from Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and house-band MC Wale.

MTV.com – So, who does Bloomberg like this year? Lady Gaga and Beyoncé have each garnered nine nominations and will face off in categories like Video of the Year and Best Female Video.

“I’m betting on you!” he told Sway. “Absolutely. I think you and Lady Gaga — the big stars. [She's] an NYU graduate.” (Actually, Mr. Mayor, Gaga dropped out of NYU to devote herself to the music scene.)

Shakira, Lady Gaga — our hats off to the mayor for knowing his stuff. He also happens to hang out with top recording artists from time to time, like Alicia Keys, who will perform with Jay-Z at this year’s VMAs.
