‘So I wake up in the morning and I feel black on the inside so I will wear black, have my hair high above my head with a puppet lobster stuck in the centre of it. If I feel really light, happy and beautiful I’ll wear something very colourful with rainbows and sparkles and have messy eyeliner and wear my hair like Peggy Moffitt. It really depends on what the day is…’

Look at the countless forums on the internet. The constant criticism and/or adulation for Gaga’s fashion sense. But what is often ignored by both the pro and the anti factions is that Gaga’s sense of style is not a distraction, camouflage or an adjunct to the music she creates, it is as equally important as the way she sounds and carries equal weight. It could be the weight of a lobster on her head today – and she will often talk about the value of something being ‘whimsical’, like a chic pre-war Lady with a penchant for Schiaparelli but make no mistake, this is no mere accident.

‘The clothing, the hair and the hats… when you are not part of that world the public can look at my love of fashion, my love of clothing and theatre as something disingenuous, as something of a mask that I could hide behind,’ says Gaga today in the middle of her strenuous world tour with all of its countless costume changes, a whirlwind of interviews and photo opportunities. And yet, even in her downtime – and I have seen it, in a distinctly untrendy East End pub feeding families Sunday lunch with no paparazzi in sight – Gaga’s sense of fashion is always ON. It is who she is.

‘There was this group of people in the fashion industry like Nick Knight, Nicola Formichetti, McQueen, Mr Armani and some of my other friends,’ she could go on, she has plenty of other high fashion supporters in that world. ‘Who saw the genuineness of what I was doing. Not the disingenuousness at all, but the liberation in that sort of work. What I love is the way it sets me free and the way I want my fans to be set free by it too. That was the most difficult fight for me in the beginning, and it still is a fight. It is a fight for the work every day, but I am unwavering in what I believe about my work and what I do because it is genuine. It is not disingenuous, it’s not a farce it is not artifice it is part of who I am and it is something that I want to share with everyone.’

Lady-Gaga.Net reader, Nathan, just sent in this gorgeous photo of him and his girlfriend posing with Gaga outside the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 5th.

We went to the arena early and checked it out. Just looking around and we found the bus loading part and she came out. She was so beautiful in person. She’s adorable and she smells so nice and she’s so so so fucking sweet!!! She asked us if we had tickets and we actually didn’t. I’ve been trying so hard for 6 months to get them, and never succeeded. We told her we didn’t and she said “Oh no, I’ll get you tickets.”

She signed my copy of The Fame Monster, took pics with me, and we talked about our peace sign tattoos.

We’re so happy for you, Nathan and Alonna. Hope you guys had fun at the ball!

UPDATE – Check out a video of Nathan and Alonna recalling the events under the cut.

OMG somebody call the papa-paparazzi! Put on your p-p-poker faces! Gagasaurus Rex has been discovered! Raw-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! It’s a m-m-m-monster!

Only kidding, the amazing creation above is the work of Creation Rex, made to honour the arrival of Gaga tonight for her Pittsburgh leg of the MonsterBall. The amazingly creative Gagasaurus, located outside the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, even plays Gaga music from the severe shoulder pads!

Gaga poses with fans at Jay-Z’s concert in Detroit, Michigan earlier this evening. Photo credit: @lexidrewLD.

Update via Rap-Up.com — She didn’t take the stage with Eminem as had been rumored, but Lady Gaga still commanded the spotlight with her presence during Eminem and Jay-Z’s second sold-out concert at Comerica Park in Detroit on Friday.

Sporting a silver micro-skirt that blew up in the wind and a silver wig similar to the one she recently rocked on her Vanity Fair cover, Gaga threw a diamond in the sky from her elevated platform in the center of the field while watching Jay’s set, rocking out to cuts including “Empire State of Mind” and “U Don’t Know.”

Visible to the fans in attendance but protected by bodyguards, Gaga, who performs tonight at Michigan’s Palace of Auburn Hills, continuously drank from a plastic cup as fans pointed her out. After watching Jay’s set for an hour, the pop star headed backstage 20 minutes before its end.

Fashion is very good at providing its own fashion’s-eye view of proceedings, but what is it like being at the very eye of that fashion storm, the undeniable focus of the world’s attention? Few creatives are as well-placed as Lady Gaga to explore those ideas, as her inimitable and unique contribution to our Fashion Body proves. Christopher Isherwood’s maxim ‘I am a Camera’ has seldom had such eloquent aesthetic expression as this film devised in collaboration with Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben – in creating a film to represent the left eye, Lady Gaga chose not to document the eye, but offer us a glimpse from within, a cinematic snapshot that unquestionably offers her own point of view on – and of – our modern culture of celebrity.
